Harrison Barnes has agreed to a new contract with the San Antonio Spurs, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Barnes had just completed a three-year, $54 million contract that he originally signed with the Sacramento Kings in July 2023. He was traded to San Antonio the following year in a three-team deal that also included the Chicago Bulls. The move was initially made to give the Spurs a reliable veteran presence to help their young roster, led by Victor Wembanyama, develop and deal with some of the growing pains.
Barnes averaged 12.3 points on 43.3 percent three-point shooting in 82 starts during the 2024-25 season. San Antonio changed its trajectory midway through that season by acquiring De'Aaron Fox from the Kings prior to the trade deadline. The Spurs won 34 games, 12 more than the previous year, despite Wembanyama missing the final 30 games due to a blood clot.
When Mitch Johnson replaced Gregg Popovich as head coach last offseason, he initially maintained most of the starting five from the previous season. Barnes' production dipped in 2025 with 9.9 points on 38.8 percent three-point shooting. He was eventually moved to a bench role midway through the year.
During San Antonio's postseason run, Barnes was used infrequently off the bench and didn't play in any of the final three games of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. It seemed like Barnes might end up as an odd-man out for the Spurs this summer given how deep their roster looks right now, but they are in a good financial position right now because Wembanyama has another year on his rookie deal before a potential extension would kick in.
Wembanyama, Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper are the foundation for San Antonio. Barnes has been a critical stepping stone for the franchise and will continue to be part of the mix as the team has become one of the top teams in the Western Conference. With his new contract, Barnes will look to continue providing veteran leadership and contributing to the team's success.
