The San Antonio Spurs announced a preseason injury to key free agent signing Tobias Harris, who strained his left calf in training camp and will be reevaluated after the preseason. The veteran forward is now questionable for the regular season opener on October 20 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. This news came just before the team's annual Silver & Black intrasquad scrimmage on Sunday, where Harris was held out.
Harris suffered a strained left calf during Spurs training camp. The team confirmed he will sit out the entire preseason schedule. A reevaluation is scheduled for after those five exhibition games. His status for the opening night matchup with Oklahoma City is officially listed as questionable. The 34-year-old power forward signed a two-year deal worth $31 million with San Antonio in July after a productive stint with the Detroit Pistons.
Harris was brought in to address a specific need for the Western Conference finalists. He provides size and offensive versatility at the power forward spot, an area the Spurs sought to improve. Last season with Detroit, he averaged 13.3 points and 5.1 rebounds, helping the Pistons finish atop the Eastern Conference. His ability to space the floor with his shooting was expected to be a major asset in San Antonio's starting lineup.
And the Spurs have the depth to manage his absence early. Julian Champagnie started many games at the four last season, with Harrison Barnes and rookie Carter Bryant also available at the position. This allows the team to be cautious with Harris's recovery. The injury is a minor disruption, but the long-term outlook for the season remains the priority.
The Spurs provided no new update on rookie Jayden Quaintance. He underwent knee surgery after the draft to address an issue that had bothered him since his freshman year at Arizona State. His rehabilitation timeline remains unclear as the preseason begins.
While this is a preseason setback, the Spurs enter this campaign with strong momentum. The team is currently on a five-game winning streak, with a perfect 5-0 record in their most recent outings. Their last result was a 127-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors on April 2, 2026. Other recent wins include a 129-114 triumph over the Chicago Bulls and a dominant 127-95 road win against the Milwaukee Bucks.
