The San Antonio Spurs have officially launched new Classic Edition uniforms and a matching court design, a retro tribute to their American Basketball Association origins. This release celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 1976 ABA-NBA merger. The team will wear the uniforms nine times during the 2026-27 regular season, beginning with a home game against the Dallas Mavericks on November 4.
The uniform features a silver base color, a nod to the franchise's early identity. The original arched 'Spurs' wordmark from the 1970s returns on the jersey front. A special ABA anthem tag sits above the jock tag, and the shorts display the classic black diamond backdrop framing the team logo. Jordan Mandelkorn, vice president of marketing, creative and retail at Spurs Sports & Entertainment, explained the significance. "Honoring our ABA roots through this Classic Edition uniform gives us an opportunity to celebrate the history that helped shape the Spurs and our city," Mandelkorn said. The design connects the team's past to its future, with the patch of partner Ledger also featured on each jersey.
The franchise began as the Dallas Chaparrals before moving to San Antonio in 1973. They were nearly named the 'Gunslingers' before becoming the Spurs. As part of the 1976 merger, the Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and New York Nets joined the NBA. Led by legends like George Gervin and James Silas, the Spurs found success. They eventually became the first former ABA team to win an NBA championship in 1999, a distinction they held until the Nuggets won in 2023. This uniform release is a season-long celebration of that unique legacy and the merger's golden anniversary.
The team is deep into its preseason schedule, preparing for the regular season. Their most recent outing was a 119-109 preseason loss to the Utah Jazz on October 12. Before that, they fell to the Phoenix Suns 102-98 on October 10 and to the Atlanta Hawks 123-116 on October 8. Their next test is a quick rematch, hosting those same Phoenix Suns at home on October 14. Fans can track the team's progress and the full schedule on our schedule page.
The Spurs will debut the Classic Edition uniforms and special court on November 4 against the Dallas Mavericks. They'll wear them for eight other games throughout the season. The rollout features prominent young players like Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant, linking the franchise's celebrated past with its promising future. While the team focuses on preseason development, this uniform launch gives fans a tangible connection to the history that built one of the NBA's most successful organizations.
